With a licensed monolingual early childhood teacher leading each classroom in English and a bilingual assistant translating in Cantonese and/or Mandarin, new concepts are introduced through weekly themes and are incorporated into each interest area as a follow up. Each thematic unit is engaging, relevant and helps children make connections, expand on prior experiences, and build new knowledge of a variety of topics. Units contain connections across all content areas and are often followed by a group field trip or community walk to foster connections outside of the classroom. Each UPK classroom has clearly established, well equipped and labeled interest areas that promotes each child to be actively engaged, make choices and construct their own knowledge through independence, decision making, critical thinking and making real world connections. This instructional program integrates all curriculum areas such as the arts, social studies, literacy, science, social-emotional education, physical education, and mathematics.
